What I LOVE Right Now.

Minutes ago, I was attempting to bake a chicken breast in the oven for lunch.  Being the lazy dishwasher that I am, I thought I would cheat by lining my baking pan with wax paper – it says right on the box that it should work for “easy” clean up! Well…no.  Seconds after I popped my healthy lunch into the oven, my smoke alarm starts obnoxiously sounding throughout the kitchen.  Oops.  Maybe I need to re-read what the heck wax paper is supposed to be used for because clearly it can’t sustain itself in the oven.  The smell of nasty chemical compositions aerated through the house.  I needed help.  Which brings me to the first item I am in love with at the present moment!

Lemon Verbena Soy Candles

Lemon Verbena Soy Candles

1. On a recent Target escapade, a good friend raved about these candles.  They burn clean and the scent in incredible.  I can’t tell you how fast my kitchen stopped smelling like burnt nastiness and started smelling clean, fresh and invigorating!  The best part is they don’t cost an arm and a leg – I believe I got away with this one for around $10.

Kindle + Third Book of the Hunger Games Series = Epic

2. Now, I realize I am late in the game here.  I’ve been hearing about the Hunger Games for a while, but I couldn’t get myself to read it.  I guess I had expected something along the lines of Twilight, which I couldn’t get into.  Plus the whole premise of the book was not anything I ever would have thought to pick up in the past. BUT! I couldn’t have been more wrong! I savored the first book.  The characters are so well developed, the plot moves along fast and is well thought out, the action is exciting and leaves you on the edge of your comfiest chair.  I’m currently midway through the third book, Mockingjay, and it hasn’t disappointed so far.  Even better? I get to read it on my Kindle.  I can’t tell you how much I love toting that to the gym.  I can’t read and run at the same time, but when I ride the bike or the elliptical I can get my fill of reading.  Plus you don’t have to fumble trying to turn the page while in motion, something I always had trouble with.

Saucony Kinvara 2

3. One thing I can’t get over is how much I adore these shoes.  I was in dire need of a new pair to run in and I’m not a big fan of too much cushion.  I wanted something lightweight and supportive, but I had no idea what I was looking for.  Before I just ran in my old, old tennies (yucky and smelly), so this was to be my first real pair of running shoes.  After visiting our local shoe store, my eyes immediately sought out this fiesty model on display.  I oogled and awed for about 10 minues, going to look at other shoes and finding my way back to these show stoppers.  After trying them on and giving them a brief test drive around the store, I was convinced (perhaps too easily, but my heart knew what it wanted).  I have never once regretted that decision!  These shoes are perfect. Everything I was looking for and more.  When I was running 6 miles over the summer, my feet never hurt or had blisters.  My high arches never ached.  Wonderful.

Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe-Joe's

4. Tis’ the season for all sorts of yumminess…egg nog, hot cocoa, homemade pies and all those sorts of things.  Obviously my waistline doesn’t appreciate these in the same way I do, but I am not one to cut myself off from having a little something sweet every now and then.  At my recent trip to Trader Joe’s, I was intrigued by the idea of candy cane oreo-like cookies.  The whole concept sounded pretty amazing.  What closed the deal was a man who ran up and grabbed three boxes right in front of me, while going on and on about how he can’t get enough of them during the holidays.  Good enough for me! I bought two boxes.  Lo and behold – they’re fantastic.  Creamy peppermint filling with bits of candy cane sprinkled in for good measure and then pressed between two chocolatey wafers. The result is perfection, especially with a cup of hot cocoa.

A Man and His Dog

5. Finally, I had to squeeze in my husband and our dog.  They’ve been cracking me up lately.  I catch them snuggling on the couch all too often.  This picture says a thousand words.  Apparently I have competition! <3

What are some things you love right now?

Gift Ideas for Everybody

If you’re like me, you probably haven’t finished your Christmas shopping.  I have so many people to buy for (like my dad) who just don’t want anything and if you buy them something it will remain unopened and unused till the end of time.

I did find some things that seem fool proof and I’m hoping they’ll help you as well.

Kids Gifts

Hallmark Recordable Story Books

These make wonderful keepsakes.  Record your voice or the voice of a loved one reading the story.  You can lock the recording so it can’t be recorded over and the batteries are replaceable so you won’t lose the memory.  They run about $29.95 but there are some coupons floating around as well!

Razor Rip Rider 360 Drifting Ride On

Razor Rip Rider

I saw something like this on Ellen and I thought it was absolutely the coolest toy ever.  She even got on and rode it!  I think it holds up to 160 lbs and is for children 5 and up.  The reviews on Amazon.com are very good and one lady mentioned that her kid got it for Christmas and hasn’t stopped playing with it. It runs about $85.

There is another brand called Ezy Roller Ultimate Riding Machine and it too has great reviews, but is a little pricier at $104.  I think either one would be a ton of fun for kids of any age!

Spouse or Boyfriend/Girlfriend

A gift to a spa for the two of you is amazing.  We had a spa day with our whole bridal party this past fall and let me tell you, BEST time ever.  The guys were skeptical (they are very manly men), but they immediately admitted to enjoying it immensely.  We want to make it a tradition to go there at least once a year now.  So I highly recommend a day of relaxation to get away from stressers of daily life.

Also, tickets to a game or concert that they’d enjoy.  I bought my husband two tickets to the Packers/Bears game on January 2nd.  I know he’s going to LOVE it and I’ll have a good time too!  Ticketmaster.com sells a lot of the tickets for these events as does Stubhub.com  but you might even check with the actual venue as sometimes they sell directly.

For the guys, stay away from buying wallets as they usually like to buy these and break them in.  His may look worn out, but I assure you he loves it that way.

For Spouse/Boyfriend or Girlfriend (who enjoys reading or any kind)

Kindle Video

Definitely the Kindle.  Amazon has two different kinds, one is $139 without wi-fi and the other is $189.  They come in two colors, but you can buy skins or cases for them.  The screen is the closest thing to electronic paper that I’ve seen. There are a bunch of free books as well.  Most of them are classics like Pride and Prejudice or Sherlock Holmes, but still good if you enjoy reading them (which I do!).

If you are looking for an actual book to give someone, try getting them the first edition of their favorite author.  For example, if they LOVE Gone with the Wind, try finding the first edition of it.  This can get VERY expensive though depending on whether the book is extremely rare.  Their are websites like Alibris and AbeBooks where owners will sell first editions so it makes shopping for them easier.  Another tip, be aware of what the first edition should look like.  For example, if the seller claims it’s a first edition but it was published 20 years after the book was actually written, it’s not the edition you’re looking for.  There are many sites out there that will help you and it is a very personal gift.

For Teens/College Students

I-Pod Touch (4th Generation)

Yes, everybody already has an I-pod by now, but this is the newest model they’ve come out with.  It does everything and even allows for FaceTime.  FaceTime is a camera that is similar to a webcam, meaning that you can actually see the person you are talking to and they can see you.  Kind of a neat feature!  The I-Pod also feature video editing and the ability to be your own DJ.  Plus a ton more, perfect for any college student or high schooler.   Even your techy husband/wife would appreciate it!

Mom and Dad

Let’s get real, parents are hard to buy for.  At least mine are.  My mom has MS and isn’t very mobile, which limits what I can get her because her ability to use it isn’t there.  Last year, I made her a photo album of all our old pictures growing up.  She loved it so much she cried.  It took a little time, but turned out great and was a very personal gift.

Create Something Amazing With Your Pictures

If you are short on time, Shutterfly.com can make the albums for you.  They look awesome and aren’t that expensive.  I believe they start around $15-20 dollars and look GREAT!  You can even make a calendar out of your family photos.  Right now they’re offering free shipping and buy one get one!

As far as Dad’s go, it all depends on what he is into.  Does he like technology?  Maybe a new camera or a handheld camcorder (to record the grandkids or vacations).  If he’s a handyman, tools are always needed.  Even when you think your dad has EVERY tool in the world, there is always one tool he could use.  Maybe he wants clothes.  This year my dad asked for a new set of screwdrivers, some dumbbells (he wants to workout in the morning), leather slippers and some heavy cotton button ups.  Yeah, not that exciting but hey, that’s what he wants so that is what he will get.

If your dad is more business-y, try new cologne or a gift certificate to a nice restaurant in the area (enough to maybe take his wife or girlfriend if he has one).
